Assyrian Universal Alliance Holds its 26th Congress in Sydney

Preparations are well underway for the twenty-sixth World Congress of the Assyrian Universal Alliance (AUA) which will be held in Sydney - Australia from 20 to 24 May, 2009. The organizing committee for this congress began preparing for this great event and is looking forward to hosting Assyrian delegations from various countries of the Middle East, Europe and the United States.

Over 50 delegates are expected to arrive at Sydney Airport on Tuesday morning 20th May, 2009 including the Secretary General of the Assyrian Universal Alliance, the Hon. Younatan Bet Kolia MP. Member of Iranian parliament representing the Christian Assyrians, the delegation will be welcomed on their arrival by members of the Assyrian community in Australia.

The Deputy Secretary General of the Assyrian Universal Alliance, Mr. Hermiz Shahen mentioned that; the official opening of the congress is hosted by Mr. Nenos Khoshaba MP, the State member for Smithfield and will be held on Wednesday, May 20, 2009 at the Theatrette Room at Parliament of New South Wales in Sydney.

Shahen said that the opening will be attended by many members of State and Federal Government, among the invited guests will be the Iranian and the Iraqi Ambassadors in Canberra.

The program will include speeches by the Assyrian Universal Alliance, and representatives from the Australian, Iraqi and the Iranian government.

The congress meetings will last for three days, representatives of most Assyrian political parties and institutions are invited to participate in this event.

The organizing committee of this congress has organised a special program for Assyrian Universal Alliance leadership to meet with representatives of the Australian government in Canberra, and ambassadors of a number of countries.

The participants in the upcoming congress will discuss the prevailing situation of Assyrians in Iraq where they face persecution from extremists and terrorists, economic and political hardship in their ancestral lands.

The delegates to the congress will explore solutions to stop the migration which is depleting the Assyrian homeland of its rightful inhabitants, and to enforce the just and legitimate demand of Assyrians in Iraq in establishing a geographically viable demarcated region on the historical Assyrian lands in Northern Iraq as part of the modern day Federal Republic of Iraq.
