The 18th Congressional District comprises Modesto, Ceres, and Turlock California, where a sizeable Assyrian population lives. The 18th District was Congressman Gary Condit's former district. Condit was defeated by Democrat Dennis Cardoza. John Kanno is an Assyrian American and a Republican candidate for Congress in California's 18th Congressional District. The local Republican party is backing Mr. Kanno.
The youngest of nine children born to an Assyrian Christian family in pre-Saddam Hussein Iraq, John Kanno brings a new and dynamic perspective to the race for the 18th Congressional District of California.
Born in Iraq, John and his family fled to England shortly before the Assassination of King Faisal in 1958. In 1981 John immigrated to the United States and settled in Modesto, California, becoming a naturalized United States Citizen shortly thereafter.
John has been employed with (Corn Products) since 1985, becoming a leader in the electrical field, a skill he would use to help rebuild Iraq after the fall of Saddam Hussein in 2003.
In 1996 John started a weekly political show "This Week in Politics" on KBSV Television located in the Ceres, California. Although originally based in California's Central Valley "This Week in Politics" started beaming its signal world wide via satellite in 2002 with the ability to be seen by John's fellow Assyrian Christian community in Iraq and through the rest of the Middle East.
John has been active as a member of the "Future of Iraq" project, working in conjunction with the U.S. State Department on the rebuilding of Iraq in preparation for a post-Saddam Hussein Iraq. John's work, in partnership with the man who is now the Minister of Electricity for Iraq, resulted in the blue print for the electrical plan that will help power a new and free Iraq.
John has been very active concerning the debate on post-Saddam Iraq, appearing as a guest on Fox News Channel, CNN, along with various national and local newspapers.
John attends the Mar Zia Assyrian Church in Modesto and sat on the Board of Directors for the Assyrian Cultural Center of Beth Nahrain. He is also a member of the National Rifle Association, the California Rifle and Pistol Association, and the Club for growth.
John is married to his wife Lydia Kanno and has two children, Natasha who is 16 years old and Nadia who is 14 years old.
