Another son has chosen to live the ascetic life of his ancient apostolic church. Today, November 30, 2008, Archdeacon David Royel was consecrated as Bishop Mar Awa Royel for the California Diocese of Holy Apostolic Catholic Assyrian Church of the East.

The consecration was conducted by the Catholicos Patriarch, His Holiness Mar Dinkha IV, with assistance of H.G. Mar Sargis Yousip, Bishop of Iraq, H.G. Mar Aprim Khamis, Bishop of the Western United States, and H.G. Mar Odisho Oraham, Bishop of Europe.

There were about 2500 people participating in today’s ceremony, not only Assyrian residents of Stanislaus county, but also from San Jose, Los Angeles, Arizona, and even Chicago. And in a professional arrangement, via the wide wings of Bet-Nahrain’s AssyriaSat, there were thousands of Assyrians witnessing how now His Grace Mar Awa takes the oath of the church, which requires him full obedience to sacred theology and of course to the hierarchy of the Assyrian Church of the East (ACOE).

His Grace Mar Awa was born in 1975 in Chicago, Illinois. His Grace is the first Assyrian bishop ever ordained that was born in United States.

ACOE’s well-educated new bishop holds a BA degree from Loyola University in Chicago (1997), Bachelor of Sacred Theology from University of St. Mary of the Lake in Mundelein (1999), License of Sacred Theology from Pontifical Oriental University in Rome (2001), and Doctorate of Sacred Theology from Pontifical Oriental University in Rome (2007).

In his speech His Grace Dr. Mar Awa promised progress in the California Diocese.

The name “Awa” means father in Assyrian, and California’s Assyrians will look forward for Mar Awa's fatherly advises and leadership.
